His Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, was guest of honour at a gala evening of entertainment at the ADC Theatre last night as part of the University of Cambridge 800th Anniversary celebrations.

Former students Griff Rhys Jones, Richard Stilgoe, Trevor Nunn, Germaine Greer, Clive Swift, Margaret Drabble and Adrian Slade were among the capacity audience who enjoyed performances from some of the University’s finest performing talent including scenes from comic operetta Cox and Box, Hamlet, Three Sisters, and Guys and Dolls.

Earlier at a pre-show reception Prince Edward, who performed at the ADC when he was a Jesus College student in the mid 1980s and who is Patron of the Theatre’s redevelopment Appeal, unveiled a plaque in the bar to mark the occasion.

The Appeal has to date raised more than £2 million for the redevelopment work, which has seen disabled access to the auditorium, stage, bar and control boxes installed, the front of house areas completely refurbished, a new dressing room and rehearsal studio block constructed, the stage space expanded and the auditorium seating replaced. The redevelopment has sought to modernise the accommodation, while keeping the familiar and friendly atmosphere of the theatre.
