The President of Cambridge University Women’s Boat Club, Isabel Boanas-Evans, has been awarded the annual Osprey of the Year trophy in what has been recognised as one of the most memorable years in women’s rowing at Cambridge.

Izzi is never anything less than truly inspirational

The Ospreys is the Society for sportswomen of the University of Cambridge. The society spans across 43 sports with over 1000 current and alumni members all of whom have achieved Blues, Half Blues and or University Colours.

The Osprey of the Year trophy is given each year to the student who has, in the opinion of her fellow Osprey proposers and the Senior Committee, done most to further the cause of women’s sport in Cambridge, support other sportswomen and excel in her own sport.

Isabel (pictured left celebrating victory in the Women’s Boat Race this year), who is reading Engineering at Murray Edwards, earned her first Blue in the 2011 Women’s Boat Race and her second in 2012.

Her Award comes at the end of a very successful year for The Ospreys in general.

The society has this year given out 17 bursaries worth almost £3,500 to Cambridge sportswomen to help with their training and competition costs.

Isabel’s nomination came with the following words:

“Over two years Izzi has progressed from her College achievements to leading crews to hold medal positions at some of the most important National events. Watching her train, her expression shows an enviable level of focus and commitment to each stroke.

“Whilst during the intense sessions she provides a role model to 30 University rowers, off the water and ergs she’s there to find a solution to each individual’s problems and concerns.

“In addition to this, she performs the complex task of organising such a large squad and their team of coaches without fault.

“Izzi has acted as an ambassador for recognition and equality, and helped shape changes which will benefit the next generation of female athletes.

“Whilst the Club looks excitedly to the future, Izzi has recognised the experience of the Club’s alumnae. She has built links with women who, under her guidance have provided a comprehensive mentoring scheme for the current squad.

“Throughout the time she commits to building these foundations, balanced with 25hours of training each week, managing injury, daily administration tasks and limited resources; Izzi is never anything less than truly inspirational. “

Anna Harrison, the 2011-12 Ospreys President said:

'With more than 40 applications for Ospreys Bursaries this year, allocating the final 17 was not an easy task, but testament to the very high calibre of women's sport at Cambridge that often goes unsung.

“I am thrilled that we were able to award Osprey of the Year to Izzi as a recognition of her huge commitment to women's rowing, her fantastic leadership and the battles that she has fought to overcome injury; a true inspiration to female athletes and a real representation of the Ospreys' ethos.'

The Ospreys are sponsored by Citi, J.P. Morgan, Accenture and Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
