A grant of £750,000 has been awarded to the Faculty of Oriental Studies to fund a new M.Phil course in Chinese Studies. Three new lecturers and a senior language teaching officer will be appointed.

Professor McMullen welcomes the new funding.

Following a review of Chinese studies in UK universities, the Higher Education Funding Council for England has pledged £150,000 per annum for a period of five years to allow the faculty to set up the course. It will be aimed at students from a wide range of disciplines, including law, politics and business management who have already completed their undergraduate degrees.

Professor David McMullen, of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, said: "This course will offer students who already have a good first degree the chance to acquire Chinese language skills and to explore the Chinese culture.

"We will also be inviting applications from professional people, such as lawyers, and specialist language courses will be offered which are tailored to meet the needs of different professions."

The course will be run by the East Asia Institute, Faculty of Oriental Studies, which exists to promote research and teaching on East Asia. The Institute is also raising funds for a new building.

The first students will begin studying at the Faculty from next October and applications will be invited shortly.
