The Queen has approved that Sir David Wallace Kt DL PhD FRS FREng be appointed to the Mastership of Churchill College, Cambridge, in succession to Sir John Boyd KCMG.
Sir David Wallace, 59, has been Vice-Chancellor of Loughborough University since 1994 and has recently been named as the next Director of the Newton Institute in Cambridge.
From 1972 to 1979 he was Lecturer, then Reader, in physics at the University of Southampton. From 1979 to 1993 he was Tait Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Edinburgh where he was also Head of Physics from 1984 to 1987. He has been chairman of numerous national and international bodies, and has written on theoretical physics and computing.
Sir David will take up his new duties upon Sir John’s retirement in the summer of 2006. He is married to Elizabeth and they have a daughter, Sara.
Churchill College was founded in 1960 as the national and Commonwealth memorial to Sir Winston Spencer Churchill (1874-1965). According to Churchill's vision, the College was created with a bias towards science, and the College admits a higher proportion of scientists and technologists than most other colleges, but the arts subjects also flourish.
The Master is Head of the House, and as such is first amongst the Fellows. He or she has an important role in the life and progress of the College, and of all its members. The precise duties vary in detail between colleges, but are essentially similar throughout Cambridge, and are defined by each college's statutes.
