Nobel Prize winning scientist Professor Joshua Lederberg will open a unique disease research facility in Cambridge on Monday 28 June.

A new laboratory and office wing at the Strangeways Research Laboratory will house complex statistical research into the causes of common chronic disease in humans.

The Genetic Epidemiology Centre houses a number of research teams looking into genetic and environmental factors in the cause of common diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Up to 150 researchers can now be housed in the building.

With improvements in genotyping technology and the increasing catalogue of human genetic variation, scientists are able to study genetic factors affecting susceptibility to these diseases more closely than ever. Large population based collections of data will be studied, analysed and interpreted to provide paths to improved treatment and prevention in the future.
