The University's National Science Week team unveils its programme of events to the public on world wide web today.

Starting on March 17, the University will play host to a ten-day extravaganza of more than 100 events, showcasing some of the best of British science. The web site includes a full preview of the programme that will be distributed around Cambridge in early February, but there are additional treats in store for online visitors, as National Science Week Web developer, Anne Parker, explained:

"Starting next week, visitors will be able to chart the progress of three local schools taking part in Science Week projects via an electronic diary. Every week, students from Milton Road Junior School, Comberton Village College and King's College School will be posting online progress reports.

"The site will also contain background information for some of the lectures taking place during the week, and people will be able to read interviews with this year's speakers to find out what made them take up careers in science."

Links to permanent projects in Cambridge, as well as admissions and careers information on the site, mean that it will be useful to visitors even when Science Week is over, according to the University's National Science Week co-ordinator, Sarah Shaw:

"Each year, National Science Week creates a tremendous amount of public interest. The aim of the site, as well as the week itself, is to show that science is fun, so alongside all the serious stuff, we've got links to activities and games that kids can take part in.

"As well as finding out about what's going on in Cambridge, the site is somewhere people can go to find out about science and how it affects them and use these pages as a launch pad to other online information. It's a way of making the excitement of National Science Week last all year round."

National Science Week at the University of Cambridge takes place from March 17-25. The national programme is co-ordinated by the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
