The extraordinary world of bandits, religion and daily life in the backlands of Brazil is brought to life in Heroes and Artists: Popular Art and the Brazilian Imagination, an exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Today, Thursday 8 November 2001, there will be an illustrated lecture about the exhibition presented by Dr Tania Tribe, the Guest Curator and a lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies. Tickets costing £5 are available in advance (see below).

Heroes and Artists displays clothes, objects and weapons once used by 'cangaceiros' - bandits of Brazilian backlands, who were active in the first half of the twentieth century - offering a unique insight into their lifestyle, tastes and aesthetic motivation. Among the items on display are objects belonging to the legendary duo Lampi
