This Christmas the University is holding a carol service for staff at 3pm on Wednesday 20 December. The service will take place at Great St Mary's, The University Church, which is at the north end of King's Parade, facing the University's Senate House and overlooking the Market Square.

Revd Barbara Moss, Chaplain at Great St Mary's, says:

"This is a carol service for people in the university who enjoy singing carols at Christmas and would like to come to sing them with their friends. It's also for those who may not have been to church for many years, or may have grown up in a different tradition, but would like to make an informal English carol service part of their experience of Christmas.

"This is the first year we have had such a service, and is in response to a request from members of staff. It will be a fairly traditional service, with what I hope are well-known carols, and bible readings from the Christmas story, but also a few readings about celebrating Christmas in our own time, when we need more than ever to hear the angels' song of peace.

I know that some people have jobs which make it difficult to come to a service during the working day, but I have written to department administrators expressing the hope that their departments will feel able to allow those who can rearrange their work to do so."

The singing will be led by a small volunteer choir who can come at 2.15 to sing through the carols with our organist before the service.

The service will last about three quarters of an hour, and will be followed by mince pies and fruit juice for those who can stay a little longer.
