With the dawning of a new millennium, a Fitzwilliam Museum exhibition and the annual Darwin Lecture Series will both address the importance of time.

Tempus: The Art of Time explores the role of time in everyday life and in the works of artists and scientists. A programme of events running in association with the exhibition includes activities for schools, poetry readings and a creative writing workshop led by poet in residence Adrian Mitchell.

A variety of calendars and diaries, paintings and the written word, testify to the importance of time.

Tempus is on show at the Adeane Gallery of the Fitzwilliam Museum until 30 April.

Time is also the theme of the Fifteenth Annual Darwin Lecture Series, which starts on 21st January. Speakers will consider time from a variety of scientific, philosophical, literary, religious and historical viewpoints, starting with a lecture by Professor Christopher Isham of Imperial College on time in modern physics. The lectures take place at 5:30pm at Lady Mitchell Hall, the Sidgwick Site, and are open to everyone.
