The Universities’ Collaboration in eLearning (UCeL), at the Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies (CARET), has received funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to establish a new Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) in Reusable Learning Objects.

The CETL has been awarded £3.3 million over five years with over a third of this funding coming to Cambridge to support Centre staff and provide an innovative programme of activities encouraging teachers to contribute their expertise towards the creation of new learning objects, flexible ‘chunks’ of e-learning, proven to be very effective in enhancing entry-level skills.

The collaborative CETL is led by London Metropolitan University in partnership with the University of Nottingham and it will provide an opportunity to address strategic concerns in variance in attainment levels in new undergraduates as the University strives to widen participation.

Internationally acclaimed workshops and learning object production processes, pioneered by the UCeL team at Cambridge, form the core activities of the CETL’s bold staff reward and development programme designed to unlock expert content and reuse it for the benefit of all. Lecturers, developers and students will be invited to Cambridge to participate in intensive residential programmes of content creation, based at Wolfson College and at the Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies (CARET).

The CETL in Reusable Learning Objects launches officially in April 2005.
