Cambridge celebrates its octocentenary as a town this year. It is 800 years since King John granted Cambridge its charter, devolving government of the city from the county Sheriff to the city burgesses.

The celebrations will begin on the evening of Sunday 7 January with an ecumenical church service at Great St Mary's, the University of Cambridge Church, where the Vice-Chancellor, and representatives of the Colleges, will join the Mayor and civic representatives. The charter was granted on 8 January 1201, and in commemoration the bells of the four city-centre churches will be rung on Monday 8 January.
