Demand for places on this year's Oxbridge conferences has exceeded all expectations with places being snapped up by 17 and 18-year-olds from all over the country.

But it isn't too late to apply. The conferences are at Wembley on Friday 16 March 2001 and at Manchester United on Friday 23 March 2001. There are still some places left and the closing date for applications is Friday 26 January2001.

Last year's conference in Manchester was the first northern Oxbridge conference of this kind, with over 1,000 potential applicants attending. The Wembley conference plays host to over 2,000 potential applicants.

Liz Walker, Marketing and Projects Manager, Lifetime Careers Brent and Harrow Ltd, is responsible for organising the Oxbridge conferences and is extremely delighted with this year's response.

"Places on the conferences, especially for the Manchester one, are being snapped up almost as fast as tickets for a Madonna concert," she said. "This shows just how well the policy for widening access to these universities is working. Many schools and colleges who have never sent students to Oxbridge before, have booked places at these conferences. The first joint conference was held in 1997 with 350 young people and now, four years later, we are expecting over 3,500."

The conferences are aimed at A-level students in their first year of study. They are seminar based, with Oxbridge tutors covering a wide range of degree subjects, as well as the application process.

Current undergraduates will run talks on life as an Oxbridge student and there will be forums for school teachers and FE college lecturers.

There will be workshops on interview techniques, and seminars on financial planning for students. In addition, there will be some organisations covering gap year and sponsorship opportunities.

The events are free of charge.
