Danielle Turner from the Department of Psychiatry, University of Cambridge and former PhD student has won the coveted Times Higher Young Researcher of the Year award.

Other recipients of the award included Professor Lisa Jardine, a former Cambridge academic who was given a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Cambridge University also came second, in the category of ‘Best Student Experience’, as voted by students around the UK.

Over ninety universities took part in this year’s awards with eighteen separate categories for nominations. Cambridge University was short listed for six categories and included Sam Chamberlain, also from the Department of Psychiatry, who was highly commended for his research, and the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research which was cited for its outstanding contribution to innovation and technology.

Professor Jardine, popularly known for her work with Radio 4, started her academic career at Cambridge, first as an undergraduate, then later becoming the first woman fellow of Jesus College. She has written 14 books and over 50 peer-reviewed publications.

She is currently Centenary Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary, University of London, an honorary fellow of King’s College, Cambridge, and was recently elected honorary fellow of Jesus College.

The award winners were announced last week at a ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London.
