Professor Duncan Maskell will take up the position of Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor on 1 August 2015.

There are many financial and other challenges to the higher education sector, and it will be essential to work in partnership with the Colleges and Heads of Schools and Departments to ensure that Cambridge remains at the forefront despite these headwinds

Professor Duncan Maskell has been appointed Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor, succeeding Professor Steve Young on 1 August 2015.

The five Pro-Vice-Chancellors are responsible for taking forward the University’s strategy and policy development, and supporting the Vice-Chancellor in his or her role in providing institutional leadership to the University, especially in their areas of responsibility.

The Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor is responsible for planning and resources, and works closely with the other PVCs, whose remits include education, research, institutional affairs and international strategy, to make sure that the University’s senior leadership group works towards shared goals.

Professor Maskell, currently Head of the School of the Biological Sciences, said: “I am delighted to be taking on the role of Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and to build on the excellent work of Professor Steve Young and the current PVCs.

“Planning and resources, for which the Senior PVC has responsibility, is central to all of the University’s activities. There are many financial and other challenges to the higher education sector, and it will be essential to work in partnership with the Colleges and Heads of Schools and Departments to ensure that Cambridge remains at the forefront despite these headwinds.”

Professor Maskell added that he would be looking to support those colleagues working hard to encourage a culture of philanthropy across the University, and supporting capital projects and the upkeep of the University’s estate.

The Marks & Spencer Professor of Farm Animal Health, Food Science and Food Safety, Professor Maskell spent nine years as Head of the Veterinary School at the University, before taking on his current position as the Head of the School of the Biological Sciences.

He has also held various roles in academia and industry, including at the University of Oxford and Imperial College London, and was co-founder of biotech companies Arrow Therapeutics Ltd, Discuva Ltd and Bactevo Ltd.

The Council of the School of Biological Sciences hopes to announce the appointment of new Head of School shortly.
