Cambridge academics lead a wide range of international activity and clear support is in place to help them plan and carry out this work with confidence. The International Support Service within the Global Engagement Office brings together guidance, practical tools and expert advice to help our academic community navigate the considerations that come with working globally.
The International Support Service works closely with teams across the University to help colleagues plan international activity with the right information and support in place. The International Engagement Hub is the central portal for practical guidance for those planning international work. It covers key considerations such as safety, legal and regulatory requirements, international working, and building partnerships. The International Support Service works closely with the Hub and other University teams to provide tailored advice when colleagues need help with more complex situations or with coordinating work that spans different parts of the University.
Safeguarding international activity
Cambridge supports its academics to work internationally in ways that are safe, responsible, and consistent with the University’s values. Several important themes guide how we think about international activity and the support we offer.
Together, these strands of support help colleagues engage across borders with the right support and preparation.
Responsible collaboration
Working with partners around the world relies on trust and shared understanding. Cambridge encourages collaboration that is fair, open, and grounded in good academic practice. Guidance helps colleagues think about ethics, cultural context, and expectations when building international links.
Research security
International research brings great opportunities but also requires awareness of potential risks. Cambridge provides advice to help protect work, data, and partnerships, and to make sure collaborations reflect the University’s values and meet relevant standards.
Personal security abroad
Many academics travel for research and partnership activity. Support is available to help colleagues prepare for travel, understand local conditions, and consider personal safety when working overseas.
Online presence and digital awareness
International work often involves online communication. Cambridge encourages thoughtful and secure use of digital platforms, recognising that online activity can carry risks and may be visible to global audiences.
International engagement hub
The International engagement hub helps our academics and professional staff navigate international activity with confidence. It connects them to the right guidance, tools, and support for wherever they are working and whatever they are doing.
