Council Statement on the Principle of Freedom of Speech in the University
The Council of the University wishes to express its deep regret that the actions of a small group of protestors prevented The Rt Hon David Willetts, Minister of State for Universities and Science, giving a lecture on The Idea of the University in a distinguished series on that topic hosted by the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. The Council values diversity of opinion and view. It believes that freedom of expression and speech is a fundamental principle of the University. The action of the protestors violated this principle. The Council affirms freedom of speech and expression as a core value of the University which enables it to fulfil its historic mission of contributing to society through the pursuit of education, learning and research at the highest levels of international excellence.
