The Proctors and Pro-Proctors

On 1 October every year the two Proctors are elected on the nomination of the Colleges acting in rotation. As the representatives of the Regent House in formal and disciplinary matters they attend Congregations, Discussions, University Sermons and meetings of the University Council and are members of various Boards, Syndicates and Committees. The Proctors patrol during examinations and may be present at University events, speaker-meetings or demonstrations, either with or without University Constables. They are assisted by four Pro-Proctors, two of whom are designated as Deputy Proctors. There is also a Special Pro-Proctor for Motor Vehicles and another Special Pro-Proctor for University Ceremonies.

The Proctors and Pro-Proctors are responsible for maintaining good order and discipline in the University. Proctorial Notices concerning discipline are posted in all Colleges and most University Buildings. All disciplinary charges brought by the Proctors will be considered by the University Advocate, who may decide to prosecute in the University Courts. The University Constables assist the Proctors and Pro-Proctors in maintaining good order and discipline and are chosen for their ability to deal with members of the University in a friendly and non-confrontational manner. Within five miles of Great St Mary's Church, these Constables have powers equivalent to those of Police Officers.

The Proctors are available to members of the University for confidential consultation upon any matter, whether it is discipline-related or not.

Junior Members of the University should consult the Proctors about:

• Speaker-Meetings and Demonstrations (See Section on Public Gatherings)
• Disputes concerning the Cambridge University Student's Union and the Graduate Union. (See Section on Student Unions)
• Registration of Clubs and Societies (See Section on Student Clubs and Societies)
• Motor Vehicles (See Section on Student Vehicles and Boats)
