Jane Cocking, Humanitarian Director for Oxfam, will deliver this year’s Humanitarian Centre’s Annual lecture on Monday 2 March to an audience of senior figures in humanitarian aid, academics, students and the local community.

“Whose world is it anyway? Humanitarian dilemmas and debates” will focus on the issues around impartiality, neutrality and accountability faced by aid agencies when responding to natural disasters. The title, rather than being just a spoof of a famous play, is the guiding theme for the talk – that those affected by disasters are the ones with the rights and who must be respected most.

Jane worked in anthropology and archaeology following her degree at Cambridge before moving to humanitarian and development management. She has worked for the Overseas Development Administration (now DfID), Save the Children (UK) and has been with Oxfam GB since 1997.

Her extensive experience of responding to humanitarian crises includes work in Somalia, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Before becoming Humanitarian Director for Oxfam she was Regional Programme Manager for Oxfam in Southern Africa, working particularly in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Ian Steed, Manager of the Humanitarian Centre, said: “The Humanitarian Centre Annual Lecture brings leaders from the UK humanitarian sector to Cambridge to stimulate debate and discussion. Humanitarian Centre works to maximise the impact of the Cambridge community in international development work, in particular by bringing together individuals and organisations to form innovative links and partnerships.”

The Humanitarian Centre is an innovative hub for Cambridge relief and development initiatives. It works to support Cambridge community members, students, academics, non-governmental organisations and companies to be more than the sum of their parts in providing effective international relief and development.

The lecture will be hosted by Lord Wilson, Master of Emmanuel College, and held at 7pm in the Queen's Building, Emmanuel College, on Monday 2 March followed by a drinks reception in the Old Library.

The event is open to all, but please let the Humanitarian Centre know if you are planning to attend by emailing events@humanitariancentre.org
