The Cambridge Overseas Trust last week signed an historic agreement to launch its first co-funded postgraduate scholarships for Taiwanese students at the University of Cambridge.
Mr Kuan Hua Lee, Director of the Cultural Division in the Taipei Representative Office in the UK, visited Cambridge to sign the agreement.
He thanked the University and the Trust for making possible this new opportunity for Taiwanese students to benefit from study in the UK, and drew parallels between the University and Taiwan, both of which aim to share their knowledge with the world.
The formal agreement, the University’s first involving Taiwan, was signed at an event in the Old Schools, and was witnessed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz. He also spoke of the parallels between Taiwan and the University, especially in the value both attach to high levels of research and education.
The Vice-Chancellor observed that this new agreement is testament to the ever-growing strength of the University’s international relations.
Michael O’Sullivan, Director of the Cambridge Overseas Trust, said that the agreement was the result of two years’ discussions, and formed part of the strategic plan of both the Trust and the University to plug the gaps in funding available for international students.
This scheme will enable the Trust to offer Taiwan graduate students similar opportunities to those already enjoyed by students from Mainland China and Hong Kong.
He looked forward to welcoming the first Taiwanese students in October, under this new scheme of full scholarships. They will be working towards doctorates in a wide range of subjects – Economics, Education, Engineering, Physics and Public Health.
