'Night Time Lapse Over the Backs' wins Undergraduate Student Photography Competition.

An atmospheric image of one of Cambridge’s most iconic panoramas has won first prize in the 'Cambridge Round the Clock' student photography competition, organised by the Cambridge Admissions Office and judged by Joanna Pitman, a photography critic, author, journalist and Cambridge alumna.

Night Time Lapse Over the Backs was taken by Alexander Johnson, a first-year Natural Sciences student at Robinson College.

Through the use of a fisheye lens and time lapse technique, and by capturing the scene at night, Alexander gives the quintessential view of Clare and King’s Colleges across the River Cam a new and unusual twist.

Alexander wins £100 in vouchers and a master class with professional photographer James Appleton.

The competition was divided into two categories – Natural/Unaltered and Artistically Enhanced.

The Natural/Unaltered category was won by Emily Lester, a third-year Engineering student at King’s College, for her image Jolly Punter, which captures the light-hearted fun enjoyed by students and tourists alike when messing about on the river.

Rachel Bingham, who is studying Archaeology and Anthropology at Trinity, scooped the Artistically Enhanced category prize with Great Court Run, her picture of the annual race held by her College and also featured in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire.

Judge Joanna Pitman praised the high standard of entries and said of the overall winning photograph: “This is a glorious photograph. I love the composition, the colours, the contrast and the overall calm of the picture. I feel as if I could look at it for hours. Utterly mesmerising.”

The competition received some 130 entries; the top 40 entries, including the winners, can now be seen at the link above right where website visitors can vote for their favourite images.

As well as online, the short-listed entries will be on display during the University of Cambridge Open Days on 7 and 8 July.

Some of the images – including Alexander’s Night Time Lapse – also feature in the latest edition of the University’s Undergraduate Prospectus.
