An exhibition of seascapes in gold leaf, Chinese inks, watercolours and other mediums are featured in the latest exhibition being held at Murray Edwards College.

Seascapes is the culmination of work painted over the last year by local artist Sarah Blake and collects large-scale images of the North Norfolk coast, mainly painted during the stormy winter months.

Working initially with sweeping strokes, Sarah has returned to her paintings to develop them with gold, pencil and pen work, to convey the sense of movement and change that comes with watching the sea.

For several years, she has collaborated with musician and composer Emma Chopourian, who has composed a new work to accompany the exhibition. Her five movement piece, inspired by the changing dynamics of the sea and the texture of the paintings, will be performed at a private viewing this Sunday.

The exhibition aims to raise money for Cancer Research UK and a collection box will be placed in the gallery.

Murray Edwards College was founded in 1954 as New Hall, a third foundation for women students at the University. It received a £30 million endowment and a new name earlier this year, thanks to a donation from Ros and Steve Edwards. The new name reflects both the philanthropy of the donors and Dame Rosemary Murray’s role in the College’s foundation.

The College is well known for its unique collection of works by female artists, the second largest in the world. The collection includes more than 350 pieces by some 250 artists, including Paula Rego and Barbara Hepworth.

Seascapes, which is free and open to all, is on show at Murray Edwards College from 24 August to 20 September. Emma Chopourian’s song cycle will be performed at a private viewing on Sunday 24 August from 3-6pm.
