On Thursday 13 July, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the opening of the new Centre for Mathematical Sciences at Clarkson Road.

Once completed, the Centre will be home to the largest and most powerful mathematical grouping of its kind in the world. It will house the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, and the university's new Physical Sciences and Technology Library. The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences and some members of the other two departments are already located on the site.

The Chancellor was given a guided tour of the site by Professor Peter Goddard, and was introduced to Professor Stephen Hawking. Professor Hawking explained recent progress on the 'Brane' theory originated by Professor Paul Townsend, which may explain how the universe began with a period of accelerating expansion that later slowed down. Dr Paul Shellard demonstrated the usefulness of the national cosmology supercomputer, Cosmos, which is based in Cambridge.

The eco-friendly new Centre was designed by Edward Cullinan Architects, commissioned by the University's Estate Management and Building Service. A tailor-made work environment has been created that combines privacy with opportunities for interaction. Special features include a domed, grassed roof and glass walkway, glass tables that can be used as impromptu wipe-clean notepads during discussions over coffee, and a special energy-efficient natural ventilation system that uses night-time air to keep people inside the building cool during the day.
