Professor Dame Carol Black

Successor to Dame Patricia Hodgson elected.

As one of Great Britain’s most highly regarded public figures in Healthcare and Science she is a role model for talented young women, encouraging them to aim high and to grasp the opportunities that joining Newnham will offer them.

The Fellows of Newnham College are delighted to announce the election of Professor Dame Carol Black, DBE, FRCP, FMedSci, as the next Principal of Newnham College, in succession to Dame Patricia Hodgson. Professor Dame Carol will take office on 17 September 2012.

Professor Dame Carol holds an eminent position in the world of healthcare and has completed two major cross-government reviews into health and wellbeing at work.

Dr Catherine Seville, Vice Principal of Newnham said: “Professor Dame Carol will bring the College a wealth of experience in guiding institutions in changing environments. We are excited by the inspired, practical leadership and supportive approach she has shown in her career to date and believe this will transfer extremely well to Newnham at a time of significant changes in the Higher Education Sector. As one of Great Britain’s most highly regarded public figures in Healthcare and Science she is a role model for talented young women, encouraging them to aim high and to grasp the opportunities that joining Newnham will offer them.”

Dame Carol said: “I am delighted and deeply honoured to have been chosen to work with Newnham, a College which was a pioneer in the history of women’s education. Its distinguished Fellowship remains committed to encouraging and supporting talented young women, and the College continues to play a vital role within an outstanding University. Mentoring young women and preparing them for the particular challenges they face as they progress through life is something which is close to my heart and which I very much look forward to continuing.”
