This Friday 9 June, the newest laboratory at Cambridge University's Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy will host an open day.

Some examples of the DERA-Cambridge Gordon Laboratory's research into advanced composite materials. Clockwise from top left: aluminium-based composite brake disks; image illustrating shear stress contours; part of a gas turbine engine produced from layered SiC-graphite laminates; a test of abrasive wear on a titanium nitride layer.

Aimed mainly at those with a scientific interest in the department's work, the event will provide visitors with the opportunity to tour the facilities of the recently opened DERA-Cambridge Gordon Laboratory, which is dedicated to research into advanced composite systems. There will also be opportunities to explore poster displays covering various topics in materials science, and to attend presentations given by researchers from Cambridge and DERA (The Defence Evaluation and Research Agency).

The activities will begin with registration at the Babbage Lecture Theatre from 10:30am, followed by tours of the department and poster displays between 11am and 1pm.

In the afternoon, a series of talks between 2:30pm and 4:30pm will cover a diverse range of topics, including:

Following tea and refreshments at 4.30pm will come the highlight of the day: an invited lecture on Thermal Barrier Coatings by Professor Tony Evans of Princeton University, NJ, USA.

Fuller details of the programme are available on a special open day web site. All are welcome.
