Two Cambridge academics have been included in the government's list of appointments to the new Human Genetics Commission. Professor Martin Richards is Director of the University's Centre for Family Research and Professor Bruce Ponder is Head of the Department of Oncology.

Two Cambridge academics have been included in the government's list of appointments to the new Human Genetics Commission. Professor Martin Richards is Director of the University's Centre for Family Research and Professor Bruce Ponder is Head of the Department of Oncology.

Professor Martin Richards, who has conducted research into the take-up of genetic testing in families with inherited diseases. Professor Ponder's research includes the genetic causes of breast cancer.

The HGC will bring together leading clinicians, researchers, lawyers and other experts to debate the impact of developments in human genetics for health and healthcare, under the chairmanship of Baroness Helena Kennedy QC. It will draw up guidelines for government ministers and encourage public participation in the debate, beginning with its first open meeting in April 2000.

Professor Richards commented, "The work presents a great challenge. The new human genetic technologies promise great benefits for our health and well being. But there are serious potential hazards unless we choose to use the techniques and knowledge wisely".
