Dispelling the Myth

Dispelling the Myth

Manish Masuria is the new face of GEEMA - the University of Cambridge's Group to Encourage Ethnic Minority Applications.

Cambridge is committed to admitting the most able students regardless of their backgrounds and for more than a decade GEEMA has been actively seeking to encourage applications from ethnic minorities.

"GEEMA is all about dispelling the myths that surround applying to, and studying at, Cambridge. I want to get the message across to as many people as possible that Cambridge is a place where students from all backgrounds can thrive," he said.

Manish joins the team at the University's Intercollegiate Applications Office after graduating from Homerton College with a BEd in education and religious studies.

This is a one-year post and throughout the year, Manish will work closely with undergraduates of the Black and Asian Caucus, a student-run support and social group, to organise a number of events to encourage under-represented ethic minorities to apply to Cambridge.

Events will include open days, when students and teachers have the opportunity to visit Cambridge, and the Summer School - a residential week, usually held in August, that gives Year 11 and 12 students an insight into life at Cambridge. He will also visit schools/colleges, across the country, to talk to teachers and pupils about studying at Cambridge, and will be on hand throughout the year to advise pupils, teachers and parents on all aspects of life at Cambridge.
