The Faculty of Divinity's new building has won an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

The building, which was designed by Edward Cullinan Architects, won the RIBA Journal Sustainability Award which is given to "the building which best demonstrates elegantly and durably the principles of sustainable architecture."

The judges said:

"The building acts as a strong counterpoint to the modernism of the surrounding context which includes Foster's Law Library and Leslie Martin's Selwyn College. While the entrance to Stirling's building is notoriously subtle, the Faculty of Divinity makes great play of its front door which is marked by a glazed rotunda and square. The project is very popular with both the students and the clients and was brought in on time and on budget."

The building may now be shortlisted for the Stirling Prize, which is the UK's most prestigious architectural prize and is awarded annually to the architects of the building which has made the greatest contribution to British Architecture in the past year. The prize is named after the architect Sir James Stirling 1926-1992.
