Sara Cooper has just been appointed the University's Director of Health and Safety. This is a newly created post, set up to ensure that the University has a coherent policy on health and safety issues.

Sara Cooper has 10 years of experience working in health and safety, following a thriving career in research.

Ms Cooper comes to Cambridge from Surrey University, where she was head of safety. Prior to that she managed a large laboratory dealing with a wide range of safety issues, including food sabotage cases.

Her first task in her new job will be to conduct an audit of existing safety practices. She is currently visiting the Heads of Schools throughout the university, to establish what safety guidelines currently exist, and to develop an integrated safety strategy for communication throughout the University:

"I want to get the message across that paying attention to safety guidelines should enable people to work more effectively.

"I'm looking forward to working with people to help them to take control over their own safety management. Safety should be fully integrated into all other aspects of our working lives."

The Safety Office can offer safety advice to all staff and students, and publishes a regular Health and Safety Bulletin containing information of interest for all sectors of the University.
