A key step is the appointment of three Programme Directors, who will head up each of CMI's programmes in Cambridge: Professor Ekhard Salje (Head of the Department of Earth Sciences) for Integrated Research; Dr David Good (Department of Social and Political Sciences) for Undergraduate Education; and Professor Nick Oliver (Judge Institute of Management Studies) for Professional Practice Programmes.

The Cambridge-MIT Institute (CMI) is entering an exciting phase, following the announcement of corporate funding from BT and the arrival of seven MIT exchange students in Cambridge.

British Telecommunications (BT) signed an agreement to become the first corporate sponsor of CMI at a unique, transatlantic 'virtual' signing ceremony on 12 October.

The BT agreement, worth £2.5 million over five years, will enable the University of Cambridge and MIT to undertake joint research and teaching projects in new IT and Telecommunications technologies.

Seven MIT undergraduates are now at Cambridge, as part of the first phase of CMI's pilot exchange programme. All seven are third year students, four of whom are studying Mechanical Engineering, one Chemical Engineering and two Materials Science.

The first group of Cambridge students is expected to join MIT during this academic year.
