This Sunday (11 May 2003) the Faculty of Classics will be holding a concert to celebrate the success of the Cambridge Classics Faculty Appeal.

From the foundation of the University, Cambridge has been one of the premier centres for the study of the Greek and Latin languages and of the classical world. Many of the giants in the history of classical scholarship have graced or continue to grace Cambridge Classics, including Jane Harrison, AE Housman, Sir Moses Finley and Sir Geoffrey Lloyd.

Today Cambridge remains one of the world's great centres for classical studies, and the current Faculty Appeal is raising money for a number of initiatives designed to maintain its leading role as a centre for teaching and research. These include enhanced language teaching provision through the establishment of a new teaching officer post and the creation of innovative software to enable the interdisciplinary study of Greek and Latin texts online.

The teaching projects are designed to improve access to Classics at a time when a growing number of schools are unable to offer Latin and Greek. The online language project will assist the teaching of Classics in schools with no specialist teachers, and the teaching officer will support Classics students coming to Cambridge with no prior knowledge of Latin or Greek, who can now study Classics at Cambridge through an innovative new four-year degree course.

Professor Paul Cartledge is Chair of the Faculty Appeal:

"The Appeal has already raised nearly £1.2m, this is a tremendous achievement. The Appeal is central to our ambitions to remain a leading centre for the study of Classics and to open access to Cambridge Classics to students from all educational backgrounds."
