This summer the Fitzwilliam Museum is planning a host of exciting children's events.

An innovative new series of leaflets describing gallery trails aimed at children has just been launched, helping children and adults alike to explore and enjoy the museum's collections.

A pocket-sized 8-page booklet called Gallery Games at the Fitz is shortly to be published, helping carers to entice their children into the heart of the Museum with games such as "Happy Families" and "Snap" based on the paintings on display.

Later on in the summer the Picture This! - Picture Book Art at the Millennium exhibition will go on show in the museum's Adeane Gallery, running from 26 August until 8 October 2000.

Designed to appeal to old and young alike, Picture This! promises to showcase the aesthetic, intellectual, imaginative and affective appeal of the contemporary picture book, celebrating the outstanding work of some of Britain's finest artists for children: Victor Ambrus, Quentin Blake (the Children's Laureate), Ruth Brown, Anthony Browne, Babette Cole, Helen Cowcher, Barbara Firth, Michael Foreman, Shirley Hughes, Pat Hutchins, Satoshi Kitamura, Gillian McClure, Colin McNaughton, Jan Ormerod, Helen Oxenbury, Jan Pienkowski, Nick Sharratt, and Brian Wildsmith. It will also feature work by Wim Hoffman of the Netherlands and Eric Carle from the USA.

An exciting opportunity for hands-on participation in the picture-making process will take place on Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 August at 10:30-12:00am and 2:00-3:30pm. Inspired by the children's book illustration exhibition as well as images elsewhere in the Museum, artist and storyteller Amanda Lebus will lead a series of Picture This! Family Workshops, providing a chance for younger visitors to create their very own illustrated stories.

A free exhibition gallery talk will also be on offer, on Wednesday 27 September at 1:15pm. Morag Styles, Reader in Children's Literature at the University of Cambridge's Homerton College, will speak in the Adeane Gallery onPicture Book Art at the Millennium.

The museum is already accepting bookings for tickets for the Family Workshops, priced at £3.00 per child with up to 2 accompanying adults admitted free of charge.

The Picture This! exhibition and gallery talk are both free.
