HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, was at the University this week to open a new building and confer Honorary Degrees.

He also took the time to visit Departments across the University and attended the opening of an exhibition of work by the painter Edward Seago, lent by HRH to the Scott Polar Research Institute.

In one of the Chancellor’s regular visits to the University, he met staff and students at Homerton College, opened the new building at the Faculty of Education, viewed the exhibition at the Scott Polar Research Institute, toured the Gurdon Institute for Developmental Biology and the Hutchison Cancer Research Institute, and presided at the annual Honorary Degree Ceremony.

During the 1956-57 Antarctic summer, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh made a tour of the Falkland Islands and Dependencies aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia. The Royal party was accompanied by invited guests, including the artist Edward Seago. In 1957, Seago presented the canvasses he had realised during the voyage. The exhibition at the Scott Polar Research Institute is the first since then to bring together, on public display, the Antarctic paintings.
