Teams from a record 15 different Cambridge Colleges and other University institutions will compete in the annual University of Cambridge Culinary Competition at The Guildhall, today (5 November).

Chefs will be tested in eight different categories, including canapés, starters, main courses and sweets.

The contest will culminate in a live judging session today at The Guildhall, which is open to the public from 12 noon to 4.00pm. More than 100 dishes will be on view to the public, together with a live Front of House competition, where waiting staff will compete against each other by demonstrating their skill in creating fabulous table settings. This years’ table decorations will all be themed around the University’s 800th Anniversary.

The College team which has the highest points total at the end of the competition will win the prestigious Steward’s Cup. Sidney Sussex College is the three times defending champion in the competition.

An eminent team of judges, led by Peter Griffiths, Director of Le Salon Culinaire International de Londres, Hotelympia, will choose this years’ winners. Prizes will be presented at an Awards Ceremony, held at Magdalene College on 26 November.

Kelly Vickers, Manager of Conference Cambridge, who is on the committee organising the Competition said: “Dining at a Cambridge College is a unique experience enjoyed by thousands of visitors to the City each year. This annual competition highlights the excellent quality, range and creativity of the food on offer, as well as demonstrating the skills of the front of house staff who have an important role to play in welcoming guests at the venues.

“We have been overwhelmed by the number of entries we have received this year. It’s very fitting that in the same year as Cambridge University celebrates its 800th anniversary, we see a record response to this annual competition which plays a key role in setting and maintaining the highest standards of culinary excellence here”.
