For the fourth year running, the University of Cambridge has topped the Financial Times annual UK universities league table, which was published on Saturday, 7 April 2001.

The Financial Times rates institutions against 20 different criteria, and gave Cambridge an overall score of 81.13. This compares with a score of 77.67 achieved by second-placed Oxford University, and a score of 75.58 achieved by third-placed Imperial College.

Oxbridge's leading position is achieved despite the fact that these figures do not take into account expediture by Cambridge and Oxford's Colleges on staff, IT and libraries. This data was published by the Financial Times alongside the traditional league tables for the first time this year, thus giving a far more accurate picture of the resources available to Oxbridge students. Had the data been included in the league table, then Cambridge and Oxford would have achieved even higher ratings - 82.34 and 78.43 respectively.
