Under an agreement between The Dr D.C. Pavate Foundation, Karnatak University in Dhawad in the state of Karnataka, southern India, and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, outstanding graduates from India under the age of 40 may apply for one of three visiting Fellowships at the University of Cambridge next year.

The Dr D.C. Pavate Fellowships are for a four-month period of study each, with residence at Sidney Sussex College.

One Fellowship at the Department of Poltics and International Studies (POLIS), effective from September 2011 is on offer for a student from anywhere in India with a good academic record in History, Political Science, International Economics, International Law or Military Affairs.

A Pavate Fellowship at Judge Business School, effective from January 2011, is on offer to applicants from the State of Karnataka who have a good academic record and interest in any aspect of Indian business and management.

The third Fellowship at either the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, the Department of Chemistry or the Department of Zoology will be effective from May 2011. Candidates for this Fellowship, again from the State of Karnataka only, should have a good relevant academic record. The selection and award is subject to the Department identifying a host research group accepting the successful candidate.

The second two Fellowships will be selected after a competition open to candidates who have for a minimum period of five years continuously, either studied at an educational institution located in the State of Karnataka, India or been employed at any place in the State in any aspect of Indian business and management will be considered.

D.C. Pavate (1899-1979) was an alumnus of Sidney Sussex College, graduating with a distinguished academic record in Mathematics as a Wrangler in 1927. He was Vice-chancellor of the Karnatak University at Dharwad, India (1954-67), President of the Inter-University Board and a member of the Executive Council of Commonwealth Universities. He received the award of Padma Bhushan from the President of India and was later Governor of the State of Punjab (1967-73).

In 1999 to mark the centenary of his birth and the Golden Jubilee of Karnatak University, the Fellowship scheme was set up to commemorate the visionary contribution made by him to the University and to the cause of education.
