The Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Dr Esmat Abdul Meguid, visited the University on 8 March. He was leading a delegation of fifteen Ambassadors from Arab countries, including Morocco, Syria, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt, as well as business representatives.

He was greeted at Selwyn college by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Mrs Anne Lonsdale, and by the Master of Pembroke, Sir Roger Tomkys. The delegation then heard from members of various University departments, including the Judge Institute of Management Studies, the Department of Oriental Studies, Department of Engineering and School of Medicine about the work of the University and their links with the Arab world.

After lunch at Pembroke College, they went to the University Library where they saw an exhibition of Arab manuscripts and the Holy Koran.

The main event of the day was a lecture in the Senate House by the Secretary General. The title of the talk was The Imperatives and the Challenges of Peace in the Middle East.
