The English Faculty is to have a new building, after receiving a donation towards the costs of the project of £900,000. The announcement was made by Professor Dame Gillian Beer at a concert held in Jesus College.

The concert was part of the English Faculty's fundraising campaign for a new building and academic posts, which has been led by Dame Gillian. It was given by the internationally renowned early music group Gothic Voices, which has close links with the English Faculty. The programme included the first public performance of works which have been made known through the research of Professor John Stevens, formerly Professor of Medieval English Literature at the Faculty. The manuscript from which some of the pieces were taken is in the University Library.

After the performance Dame Gillian announced the generous donation by Trinity College and said that this brought the sum available to a total of £2million. She added that the process of appointing an architect for the building has already begun. She said that she was "delighted to move forward" with the building "which will provide a centre for the intellectual life of the whole faculty, teachers and students alike."
