Two research organisations have been officially welcomed into their offices on the newly opened 6th floor of the Judge Institute of Management, the University of Cambridge’s business school.

Joining the celebration to mark the event was Sir Alec Broers, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, and Sir Paul Judge, whose generous benefaction helped endow the Judge Institute of Management.

Late last year, after much hammering and sawing, the last of the wards in what was formerly the old Addenbrookes Hospital finally disappeared. Smart new offices took their place. One wing of the Top Floor is now being used by the Centre for Business Research (CBR); the other by a new organisation, the Cambridge Endowment for Research in Finance (CERF).

The CBR is an independent research organisation within the University, and supported by core funding from the Economic and Social Research Council. It has also worked for a prestigious list of clients ranging from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to the Department of Trade and Industry, the Royal College of Midwives and the British Bankers’ Association.

CERF is a leading international research programme in finance. It is focusing on financial markets and institutions which have re-emerged as prime determinants of micro-economic behaviour and macro-economic performance.

The move into the Judge Institute of Management means that the Cambridge business school now hosts one of the largest concentrations of interdisciplinary business and management research activity in Europe. This significantly strengthens its capabilities and it is already fostering several collaborative research projects with the Centre for Business Research.

Professor Alan Hughes, Director of Research at the Judge Institute of Management, and Director of the Centre for Business Research, says:

"We are delighted at the exciting opportunities which the creation of specialist research laboratory space in the Judge Institute building provides for all of my colleagues here. It also greatly strengthens our ability further to develop the fruitful research interactions which the CBR has generated between the many University faculties and departments which collaborate in the CBR’s research programme."

Professor Sandra Dawson, Director of the Judge Institute of Management, says:

"The recent full EQUIS accreditation and leading rating in the research assessment exercise have highlighted the quality of research in our business school. The arrival of the Centre for Business Research and the Cambridge Endowment for Research in Finance is another important foundation that will ensure that we continue to provide world leading business and management research in Cambridge."
