A Cambridge college will celebrate completion of the first phase of a major expansion with the opening of a building tomorrow.

When completed, Ann’s Court will be a substantial extension to Selwyn College’s buildings, providing further accommodation for students and conference delegates, a library and an auditorium.

Guests at the opening of the first phase, a £7.5 million development forming the East Range of the new court, will include the University Vice-Chancellor Professor Alison Richard. Selwyn alumnus Dr Chris Dobson and his wife Ann, major contributors to the fundraising campaign, will be guests of honour.

Designed by renowned architects Porphyrios Associates, the striking modern building has been created using traditional methods to link with the existing Victorian and Edwardian College architecture and contrasts well with the eclectic range of modern architecture on the adjacent Sidgwick Site.

With 44 en-suite student rooms and 15 administrative offices the building is a boost to the College’s fortunes. It was funded entirely by donations from College alumni and friends.

“This is a significant moment for Selwyn,” said Professor Richard Bowring, Master of Selwyn, “It is the first major expansion of the College’s buildings since the 1960s. Our thanks go to Chris and Ann Dobson for their magnificent benefaction which has made all this possible. We look forward to completing the whole court in due course.”
