International Cambridge

Europe

PE(1) by anka@happyhangaround on flickrThe University of Cambridge is Europe’s leading research university, with a significant impact on the local, regional, national and European economy. This leading role is reflected in the fact that Cambridge was the biggest recipient of EU research funding under the Sixth Framework Programme (2003-06), and is the leading university recipient of research funding under the Seventh Framework Programme (2007-13). Cambridge has an important role to play in EU-funded research to ensure best value for money for EU taxpayers and the best research outcomes for the EU as a whole.

League of European Research UniversitiesCambridge sits at the heart of Europe’s foremost technology cluster (the so-called ‘Cambridge Phenomenon’), and plays a central role in the European Union’s innovation agenda. Through high-level participation in pan-European bodies, such as the European Research Area Board and the League of European Research Universities, and strong bilateral relations with institutions in European countries, Cambridge is committed to active and positive engagement with Europe.

Students from European countries (excluding the UK) make up 10% of the total student body at Cambridge; many are supported by scholarships and bursaries administered by the Cambridge Overseas Trust and the Gates Cambridge Trust. The University of Cambridge is an active particpant in the Erasmus student-exchange programme - over 20 departments in Cambridge have Erasmus agreements with 81 EU universities - and in the Marie Curie Actions researcher mobility programme.

Cambridge has outstanding breadth and depth in the study of European languages, cultures and history. Teaching is offered in ten European languages; the Department of Slavonic Studies is unique in the UK in offering undergraduate and graduate teaching in Russian and Ukrainian. The Centre for European Legal Studies provides a focus for research in European Union Law and European Comparative Law, as well as the national jurisdictions of the different European countries and their relationship with the common law. The Centre for Science and Policy’s innovative Policy Fellowships Programme delivers opportunities for decision makers from government and industry across the EU to forge useful and lasting connections with researchers.

From its Brussels office, the Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership brings its expertise and network of leaders to European policy makers through programmes such as The Prince of Wales’s EU Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change. The Centre for Business Research runs a joint project with universities in France, Germany and the Netherlands to study university-industry-public sector links. Cambridge University Press has an Iberian branch office in Madrid, which publishes for the whole Spanish-speaking world.
