Dr Paul Schofield, from the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience, is awarded the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative prize.

Dr Schofield was recognized for his work on PhenomeNET, a network that integrates phenotypic and genotypic information from human and model organism databases with drug target and indication data. It is used to facilitate the discovery of novel human disease genes and repurposing of drugs for rare diseases.

The prize, which is sponsored by the Pistoia Alliance, was presented at the Ontology Matching Workshop of the International Semantic Web Conference 2016 in Kobe, Japan. The winning entry, Integrating phenotype ontologies with PhenomeNET was jointly awarded to Dr Schofield, Professor Robert Hoehndorf (King Abdullah University, Saudi Arabia) and Professor George Gkoutos (University of Birmingham).
