Licence Types

Freeware: Usually available from the web as a download.

Shareware: May still need to be licenced and may need an activation code.

Network: One or more licences for the application allow the application to be available on a wider number of machines than there are licences. Licence numbers are managed by a KeyServer.

University site wide: Can be restricted in licence numbers and can be allowed for wider use within the purchasing department, University and/or colleges. A site licence makes use of concurrency.

Standalone: A licence is required for each machine you wish to have the application on. There is normally no concurrency allowed by sharing a specific number of licences (a pool) across a larger numebr of machines. A standalone application may require manual installation after each the Operating System state on a workstation is reinitialised e.g. after ghosting of the MCS Windows or Linux image onto the machine. If the application uses an activation code then every time it is reinstalled it may require a new activation code. Currently we release a new Windows image twice a year and that for the Macs and Linux once a year. Individual machines can be re-imaged at any time e.g. after a hardware failure.

For all these reasons, Standalone licences with individual licence keys are not a preferred form of licensing for Desktop Services applications.

Concurrency

You can purchase Network or University Site Wide or in some cases individual licences which allow concurrency. This allows the application to be used over multiple machines but limits the launches allowed of the application to the number of licences purchased. Example: 10 licences for Adobe Photoshop can float over 20 machines. If all the licences are in use then the 11th person will receive a message informing them that no licences are avaiable at the moment.
