Conference IDs for delegates
The Computing Service will soon be allocating sets of permanently assigned IDs for use by conference delegates at an institution. In general, they will not be allowed access to the full range of MCS software but rather they will only have access to a restricted set of applications. Users of a conference ID will be able to access their own email facilities through a web browser.
Each institution will receive a permanent block of conference IDs. These IDs will start with the letter V, and be of the form Vnnnn.
Conference ID restrictions
The following restrictions apply to the use of a V account:
- These IDs are MCS specific and have no validity on any institution's PC or Macintosh other than a MCS managed workstation.
- Software that is licensed for educational purposes will not be made available to attendees at non academic conferences.
- V accounts must not be used by those visitors wishing to attach their own machines to a college or department network.
- A Hermes account for the use of email facilities will not be available with a V account.
- Printing is at the discretion of the institution hosting the conference.
- The conference should conform to the guidelines at Use of the CUDN/JANET by Conferences in Cambridge.
How to obtain a block of IDs
The Computer Officer(s) at each institution will be responsible for the management of these IDs. The information collected on this form will be used only to process your request and to administer the accounts to which it relates.
Please note, you will be responsible for the following:
- Computer Officers must keep a log recording the individual to whom these conference IDs have been assigned including the start and end date. This is necessary where abuse of the facilities may have occurred.
- If the institution allows printing with their conference IDs, then these IDs will need to be included in the college or department group.
- These are not communal IDs - they are allocated to one person and one person only for any given conference.
- Each account must be cleared and the password changed as soon as possible after the conference closes.
To apply for additional Conference IDs over and above the number of IDs that has been permanently allocated to the institution, please contact user administration at mcs-admin@ucs.cam.ac.uk. These IDs will be reclaimed by the CS at the end of the conference.
