Friendly email names
All students and many staff have email addresses similar to
jsb97@cam.ac.uk and these are the email addresses that
appear in the email
search.
Some members of staff also have an email address similar to
joe.bloggs@st-botolphs.cam.ac.uk or
joe.bloggs@randomstudies.cam.ac.uk. These are known as
'friendly names'.
'Friendly names' are always associated with a department, faculty or
College as above. They are never available on the Central Message store
(Hermes) where the danger of confusion because of clashing names is far
too great, i.e. joe.bloggs@cam.ac.uk is not available.
Whether your institution supports friendly names or not is a matter for
the institution to decide.
There are two ways in which a user may have a 'friendly name"
- The user's institution (department, College or Faculty) may run their own mail server supplying staff and possibly research students with mail boxes on an institutional server. If your department runs its own mail server, then you should contact the person who runs the server for further information.
- The user's institution (department, College or Faculty) may elect to run a 'managed mail domain'. A managed mail domain gives an institution some of the advantages of running their own mail server without the work of actually doing so. Further details of this are in the leaflet G25: Managed Mail Domains.
