The Programme could never have come into existence without the support of many institutions and many individuals. We, the Core Committee, are grateful for the support given to us by our Colleges, and also by Downing College when DK was on the Committee, and more recently by the Royal Society. We hugely appreciate the interest and encouragement we received from the Presidents of the Royal Society, Sir Aaron Klug and later Lord May each of whom frequently attended the seminars, from the successive Vice-Chancellors of the University, Sir David Williams, Lord Broers and the Professor Alison Richard and, most importantly of all, from those ministers and their senior advisors who attended and encouraged others to attend, and so actively became engaged in the discussions. We are indebted to our many colleagues who gave us the benefit of their advice both on the specific format of the seminars and on possible speakers and to the speakers themselves, many of whom travelled long distances, who put great effort into each of their presentations. All of our colleagues freely and willingly gave their time to the enterprise. The staff at Sidney Sussex College, where all but one of the seminars have been held, have enthusiastically supported us, provided excellent sandwich luncheons and, in Mr Patrick Gates, provided a skilled and patient computer officer who had to cope with demands posed by the diverse audio-visual aids that the speakers required. On a personal note, I am particularly indebted to two individuals. Mrs Maggie Edwards who not only had to meet her responsibilities as my secretary when I was Master of Sidney Sussex College, but also had to see the Programme through its teething problems. She did so with good humour and efficient hard work. After my period of office as Master came to an end I approached Mrs Pauline Box in the hope that she would be willing to help with the Programme. Pauline had been my secretary for a time when I was head of the Department of Zoology, but she was now retired. She came out of retirement to help. She has been magnificent, and it is true to say that without her help, her commitment and dedicated efficiency, the Programme could not have been sustained.
The Core Committee is indebted to the Royal Society of London for the financial support it has given
